The sun shines bright on the shiny thing,
making it warm to the touch most hours of the day.
It is a welcome staple for its garden neighbors,
who use its warmth as a mitigator.
While helping make the surrounding earth feel like home,
the shiny thing does what all shiny things do:
attempts to keep shining the whole day through.
Knowing deep down that no matter the effort,
its shining will eventually pause,
and its garden neighbors will run along, without much thought,
leaving the shiny thing wondering if it’s worth shining at all.
The shiny thing remains unaware.
It was never given its shine to keep its garden neighbors close.
Its shine was a gift from the sun,
to let the shiny thing know it had always been loved.
