Savor It

Recently, I have been hooked on plain non-fat Greek yogurt doctored with a tablespoon of a mix of chia, flaxseed meal, and hulled hemp seeds, two spoonful’s of mini chocolate chips, a spoonful of honey, and fresh, diced peaches. It has become a breakfast staple. It is now right up there with my usual instant grits where I typically add shredded, mozzarella cheese and chicken bacon. (Please do not come at me for enjoying chicken bacon.)

I typically inhale this doctored yogurt because I am clocking in for the day. I realized being off from work recently I just do that anyway. While off, I was eating it more as a dessert to satisfy my craving for something sweet. I ended up pausing during mid-inhale and realized I did not have to eat it fast. I did not have anything to get back to. I had plenty of time to actually take my time and enjoy it.

However, I did not want to. I wanted to taste all the flavors and different textures in my mouth immediately because it was so simply delightful and satisfying.

It made me think. There are so many other areas in our life where we are only looking forward to a particular outcome like a vacation or holiday or new job or relationship, and we completely bypass enjoying the present moment. We forget to savor the now because we are in a rush to reach our destination, the now that will eventually get us where we need to be. We forget that it is actually the little moments that make the big and seemingly, big moments so special. We also fail to see that the destination can become clearer when we pause to enjoy the now. Sometimes, the big moments are in the journey and not the destination. We just need to put our self-made map down long enough to see that.

All thanks to plain non-fat Greek yogurt, I am consciously choosing to savor the now and truly be present in my everyday. I no longer want to miss out on all the small moments this life has to offer that are just waiting for me to pause and enjoy.
